Saint Malo
A true fortress
The corsaire city cultivates it's nautic image. It is therefore logical that Saint Malo is the theatre for a number of events.
For example The 'Route de Rhum' and every 4 years the Quebec transat.
The fine sand beaches surround the fortressed town.
The sculptured rocks of Rotheneuf are 5 km From Saint Malo's fortified walls ,following the sea towards Cancale. These rocks give a strange appearance.
Full of personnages from another time, the grimacing faces were created by the hands of men. The magical gargoils we see from the cathedrals
The works of art are due to Abbey Adolphe Fourè (1839-1910)an ordained priest from Rennes; At the age of 55 following a cerebral vascular accident he was left deaf and dumb. He retired to Rotheneuf and sculptured . Inspired by the legend of Rotheneuf ,pirates, nobles and bloody temperement ,he laid the scene for each member of the family; flirting with the creatures of hell.The result is a stone Garden of 55m2 which dominates over the ocean ,an extraordinary site.
Don't forget at Rotheneuf the Manoir of Limoelou where Jacques Cartier Lived.
Not far from the rocks this manoir from the 15th and 16th century was thanks to the canadien foundation MacDonald Stewart. This industrial giant sold his empire to finance cultural Works
